Project Summary
The original building was built in the 1920's in two phases. It has been a constant feature of the main street, Connaught Drive since then. Over the years it has seen only a few businesses operate, what it has been well known for is that it has been a wonderful backdrop for many a tourists photograph. As the pilot case for the new "Heritage Incentive Policy", the owner was eager to retain the original building, but put an sensitive addition to the rear. Working closely with Parks Canada, Jasper Townsite Committee and Alberta Community Development a plan was developed. The construction was started in May 1996 and is slated for completion September 1996. The construction is primarily concrete block walls, wood roof system and cladding materials sympathetic to the rich, rustic qualities of the building form of the existing building and the general requirements of the "Motif Guidelines - Jasper". Along with a grant from The Alberta Historical Resource Foundation and the application of an innovative heritage policy from Parks Canada, this building will continue to be a major feature of Jasper. This is one of the only true, fully clad stone buildings remaining in the Province of Alberta. The exterior utilizes stone cladding and wood siding, custom sized to match the existing historical material discovered during the initial research on the building. The building will be re-painted to match the original colours of the 1920's era building. As mentioned, the approval process was greatly aided by the utilization of computer modelling. Using scanned images of the original building (below, left) a new model was created to superimpose on top of the image (below, right)
