Project Description

Designated a Heritage Building by the Alberta Government, the Canadian Life Assurance Building dating from 1913 now forms the heart of the most high-tech, glamorous building in downtown Calgary. Built to stand as Trizec Corp. landmark, the 52-storey Bankers Hall encapsulates the Canadian Life Building, which houses the CIBC.

Extensive renovations to the six-storey Canadian Life Building meet guidelines of the Alberta Ministry of Culture Historical Site Service and the Calgary Historical Society. The exterior is faced with terra cotta supplied by Hathemware Ceramics Ltd. in England, to match the Royal Doulton Company original faience, from the moulds used in the initial construction of the building. Interior refinishing maintains the character of the building, while new partitioning achieves the planning requirements of the client. Building codes were negotiated.

With its memorable forms and dramatic stone and glass, the overarching Bankers Hall dominates Calgary's skyline, yet welcomes people from the adjacent pedestrian mall in to the most prestigious shopping centre in the city. The vaulted lobby also serves as a venue for speakers and entertainers; movie theatres and restaurants complement recreational facilities. But above all, Bankers Hall is a place for doing business because it is the place to see and be seen.

The first phase of a two-tower complex, it integrates Canada's two largest banks on one site. The existing Royal Bank Building was renovated at the time of Bankers Hall construction.

Construction of the 268,000 square metres was done on a phased fast-track basis with 25 separate tender packages. Working drawings and design studies were done on CADD. The Cohos Evamy Partners was prime consultant. It provided architectural and interior design services, joint ventured the electrical, and co-ordinating the structural and mechanical engineering.
