Deerfoot Sportsplex

Archiasmo Architectural Works

Project Description

The new Deerfoot Sportsplex is a 40,000 sqaure foot twin arena addition to an existing gymnasium. The new construction is pre-engineered building and masonry.

Design Approach

The Siksika Nation was vey proud to have a new twin arena and wanted the building to be a reflection of their culture. We also felt that it was very important that the final building look like one complete building, and not like an addition to the existing building. The new construction was tied into the existing building with overlapping roofslopes and the use of an identical splitface block. The brightly colored block pattern on the north and west walls was derived from traditional geometric patterns and colors. The colors of the roof and entrance are very important colors to the Nation. The roofslope was offset to reflect the distant mountains and add energy to the roofline. The logo was positioned above the entrance to accent the offset slope. The resulting North elevation has an abstract sense of assymetrical movement about a central point that is similar to contemporary native art. The entrance poles are reminiscent of teepee poles and bring attention to the main entrance. A logo with Deerfoot, the famous Siksika runner, was designed by a local artist and replicated in an eight foot circle for the existing east gymnasium wall.
