Alpine Building
Project Description
The Alpine Building is a five storey concrete office building built in 1958. We were challenged to provide the design for an exterior and lobby renovation that would re-establish a street presence for what had become a very plain box next to its more modern neighbours.
Design Approach
We felt the most interesting approach would be to bring a sense of the fifties back into the old building with a contemporary twist. Curved surfaces finished with polished steel have been used extensively to allude to the fascination with futuristic chromed images typical of the era. The decision to esablish a roof deck provided a wonderful opportunity to break up the roof line with glass extending above the parapet, and allowed us to design a structure of polished steel flying trusses above the deck. What originally was intended to be a covered deck was left open once the owner saw the design and decided not to cover the trusses from above. This provides an interesting view from the higher offices on all sides as well as from the ground. The polished steel front door adds a 50's diner look. The lobby was finished in the same spirit with period terrazo, polished steel and fine wood finishing.
