RANDY COHEN/
ATELIER BIG CITY
Formed in 1987, the group's name demonstrates their interest in the urban environment and a concern for the public dimension of architecture. Their work combines metaphorical/interpretative themes with innovative material use and construciton. The projects are structured on a strong conceptual approach based on the interpretation of programme and siting strategies.
Of particular interest to the gorup is the notion of public space in buildings and the importance of the architectural promenade, a spatial journey animated by relations between elements of the programme, and between the built project and its environment. Their work has received national recongintion in the form of a Canadian Architect Award, and most recently Atelier Big City has been awarded the Pris de Rome. |

CARMEN CORNEIL
DOUGLAS GILLMOR LECTURE
As both an architect and educator, Carmen Corneil has defined a provocative and reflecive dimension within Canadian architecture. Professor Emeritus in the Programme of Architecture at the University of Toronto where he has taught since 1967, Carmen Corneil has also lecured and taught internationally, most notably at M.I.T. and at N.T.H., Trondheim, Norway.
In Practice since 1965, Carmen and Elin Corneil's work demonstrates the influence of Dutch Structuralist thought. Later projects such as OPSSEU Offices (1989-91) have been characterized by experimentaion in juxtaposition resulting in original manipulations of space and scale, while McMullen House (1988-92) has exploited the opposition between site-specific conditions and the use of standardized materials. Their award-winning word has been exhibited and published internationally. |
